tHinkABITS – Applied Learning Programme (ALP)
Juying Primary believes in developing deep learning competencies and dispositions in students to lay the foundation for lifelong learning. In alignment with its vision to nurture values-driven and future-ready individuals, the school has conceptualised the Applied Learning Programme (ALP), tHinkABITS, to promote the acquisition of deep learning competencies and dispositions amongst its students.
Equipping learners with these skillsets and positive learning attitudes empowers them to take charge of their learning, and gives every child a strong start in their formative school years.
Developing Deep Learning Competencies
In tHinkABITS, students will be engaging in applied learning experiences founded on the Play-Based (Lower Primary) and Phenomenon-Based Learning (Middle and Upper Primary) pedagogical approaches to construct and apply their knowledge across subjects in creative play and interdisciplinary inquiry.
Lower Primary – Play-Based Learning
The school believes that Play is an integral part of students’ learning in their formative school years; it motivates and extends students’ learning by building on their curiosity and interests in fun and meaningful contexts.
At Lower Primary, students will be engaging in learning experiences founded on the Play-Based Learning approach (Thomas, L., Warren, E., & de Vries, E.,2011). These learning experiences harness students’ imagination and curiosity to extend their learning. Students get to explore the world around them and apply their knowledge learnt in the process.
Using SCRATCH Junior (a block-programming tool), our Primary 2 pupils create digital animated storybooks to educate others on the changing climate caused by human activities.
Middle & Upper Primary – Phenomenon-Based Learning
At Middle and Upper Primary, students will engage in interdisciplinary inquiry founded on the Phenomenon-Based Learning (Silander, 2015) pedagogical approach.
Students will engage in both guided and student-led inquiry on topics revolving around the phenomenon presented. They will explore topics such as Energy Conservation, Global Warming and Climate Change, Water Conservation and Plastic Waste Pollution, and develop solutions to solve the given problem. Students will explore the use of child-friendly maker kits and coding tools to prototype and demonstrate their ideas. A child-friendly maker space is set up to facilitate and support their ideation process.
Students who demonstrate strong interest and aptitude will be selected for mentorship as part of the school’s Talent Management Programme. They can delve deeper into their interests and showcase their learning through platforms like competitions.

Developing Positive Learning Dispositions
Growth Mindset (Dweck, C.S. & Leggett, E.L., 1988) and Habits of Mind (Costa, 2009) are learning dispositions which enable the acquisition of the Deep Learning Competencies. All students are introduced to them progressively through both formal and informal platforms like FTGP, assembly programmes. Opportunities for students to apply learning strategies to hone these habits will be structurally weaved into their daily lessons in the academic and non-academic areas.
Through this ALP, the school seeks to help learners to connect their learning with the real-world, and in the process, develop deep learning competencies. These learning experiences also aspire to set the stage for learners to discover their passion and purpose, and sow the seeds of innovation in them.
