Our Signature P1 Integrated Curriculum
Juying Primary believes that an enabling curriculum, which builds on students’ curiosity and interests in fun and meaningful contexts, nurtures the joy of learning and lays the foundation for lifelong learning in our students.
The school has boldly taken the big step to transform teaching and learning for the lower primary cohorts by conceptualising and implementing our signature Primary 1 Integrated Curriculum.
The school believes that all children can learn and want to learn. They have an innate sense of curiosity that should be nurtured. They wonder, question, explore and seek to make sense and meaning of their world. By acting on their curiosity, we can spur them on to continue to discover and learn more. The school is also cognizant of the fact that children’s thinking and reasoning skills evolve over time as they build new knowledge upon their existing knowledge and experiences. Through this continual process of thought and reflection, children deepen their understanding of how the world works.
Our 6As Approach
In the planning, designing and implementation stages of the meaningful and relevant learning experiences for our students, teachers are guided by 6 principles.
Applied & Integrated – The integrated curriculum provides opportunities for children to make meaningful interdisciplinary connections and apply their learning in meaningful contexts. This helps them appreciate the relevance and value of what they are learning.
Authentic Learning Experience – The curriculum seeks to provide learning experiences that allow students to construct knowledge and investigate problems in contexts that are real, relevant and meaningful to them.
Active Learning – Teachers adopt creative learning strategies to make lessons come to life because children learn best by doing and exploring. For example, some language skills are taught through role-play and drama, Maths concepts through games, Chinese Language through songs, to name a few. Children can better understand and remember skills and concepts learnt through participation, exploration and experimentation involving real-life objects and experiences.
Academic Rigour – Whilst we inject fun, we ensure there is academic rigour. This integrated curriculum seeks to extend our children’s learning beyond the subject disciplines in depth and breadth. In the process, they develop higher level thinking, intellectual depth and attitudes for self-directed learning. We also introduce our students to ‘Growth Mindset’ by Carol Dweck and ‘Habits of Mind’ by Art Costa for the acquisition of dispositions, skills, values, and attitudes to be successful future-oriented lifelong learners.
Association with Others – Teachers play an integral role as designers and facilitators of learning experiences to extend children’s thinking and learning. To build on these blocks, we believe in partnering parents so that they can actively support their children’s development and learning. Teachers also make efforts to listen to parents, support them, and ensure that they have the tools to be active partners in their children’s school experience. Such partnerships are essential for helping students achieve at their maximum potential.
Assessment – Assessment is an important aspect of learning and teaching in this curriculum. At primary one, there are no semestral exams to enable our children to ease into formal schooling more smoothly. Instead, holistic assessments emphasise the development of skills and values, as well as the acquisition of knowledge to enable our children to build greater confidence and develop a stronger desire to learn. Children and parents will receive richer and more regular feedback that highlights areas where your child has done well, and also ways to improve his/her learning.
Our technology-enabled curriculum
Another unique feature of the P1 Integrated Curriculum is the introduction of 1:1 ipad for all the P1 students. This novelty brings about greater engagement and joy of learning to the students. The teachers believe that an iPad classroom makes learning more active and meaningful for children who are digital natives.
Since its implementation, this curriculum has garnered tonnes of good reviews from our students and stakeholders.
The school will continuously seek to make the school an exciting place to acquire knowledge and skills, where learning is fun and rigour is upheld.
