Inquiring, Thinking and Skilful Innovators
What is Science?
Science is the study of the physical and natural world around us through observations and experiments.
It is a powerful “way of knowing” based on experimentation and observations of the natural world. We depend on science for unbiased and accurate information of the natural world. The unbiased and accurate information forms the body of knowledge which can take the form of scientific principles and concepts.
In Juying Primary School, we strive to provide experiences that serve to develop scientific literacy amongst all pupils. This allows them to understand the world around them, make informed choices and approach challenges in the real world confidently.
To achieve the outcomes mentioned above, the department adopts the national Science Curriculum framework. The framework summarises the fundamental aim of science education in Singapore; to develop our pupils into effective citizens, able to function in and contribute to an increasingly technologically-driven world.
Pupils are thus encouraged to ask questions and explore issues on
- science in daily life,
- science and the environment and
- science in society
They will grow to value and use science as a tool to source for answers to their questions with teachers as facilitators and role models of the inquiry process in the classrooms.
P3 Zoo Camp
To help our Primary 3 pupils transit smoothly in the learning of the new subject, the school organises a 2D1N camp in the zoo for all our Primary 3 pupils. The fun-filled adventure takes our pupils to intimate animal encounters and offers them hands-on experiences with the animals so that they can better relate to the concepts learnt in Life Science. Besides heightening the pupils’ sense of adventure and curiosity, the camp also enables them to learn about conservation and protection of animals and plants.
Learning Journey to the Singapore Science Centre
To complement the Science syllabus, learning journeys to Singapore Science Centre are organised for pupils to enhance their learning experiences in Science. These learning journeys complement the content pupils learnt during science lessons. Through the enrichment activities, pupils can appreciate and relate to the concepts taught better.
Science Olympiad Enrichment Programme
Our school conducts the Science Olympiad Enrichment Programme for selected Primary 5 pupils to generate greater interest in Science among pupils. It is also an excellent opportunity for our pupils to identify and explore their talents in Science.
During the sessions, pupils learn Science through fun experiments and activities and enhance their knowledge beyond the syllabus. They will then apply the concepts and skills they have learnt during training in Singapore Primary Science Olympiad.
Excellence 2000 (E2K) Science Programme
Excellence 2000 (E2K) Science Programme Singapore is an enrichment programme for upper primary (P4 to P6) pupils who demonstrate interest and ability in Science.
Through the programme, pupils gain deeper appreciation of scientific investigations involving advanced science concepts by taking part in various scientific inquiry tasks. In addition, pupils will develop the habits, attitudes and dispositions scientists possess, as well as to gain important 21st century competencies such as critical and inventive thinking and effective communication skills.
The Science Carnival, organised by the Science department, took place on 11 Nov 2019. Through a range of engaging and fun filled activities, the carnival aimed to
- bring fun and the joy of learning of Science,
- ignite pupils’ interest and spark their curiosity in the world of Science,
- help pupils learn science concepts that are beyond the textbooks,
- help pupils understand that science is all around us.
Singapore Science Centre
Our school partners the Singapore Science Centre to conduct Learning Journeys for our pupils and participates yearly in the Sony Creative Toy Competition to foster the joy of learning Science.
